I like how the black edge looks like blood is running off it. Is this set on Tarkir? It's got the dragons and the banners...

Just like the previous one - it makes sense with the Dragon broods being allied-colored.

1/1 Zombie tokens are atypical. Only puny Wizards and Goblins make for 1/1 Zombie tokens.

What do you think of Waste Not?

I like the growth along two axes you introduce with the double use of target. Subtle but potent.

Since overload is a bonus option to kick the spell up a notch not going to aggressive with the cost is a good idea.

5 is quite a large number - discounting effects by more than e. g. a single activation of Rosheen Meanderer.

The X+2 in that blue-red spell looks a bit unappealing.

Is it intentional that one mode of each of the modal spells is far more of an intersection of the two colors than the other?

It seems weird that the pair that end the war are so aggressively themed. The ability to grant such a potent keyword as double strike to your own board seems more potent than the five mana - especially considering the synergy with battle cry.

Neat choice of characters to partner up though.

    Xyzis, Blight Oblivion
    Legendary Creature - Zombie Dragon

    Devour 2
Whenever a creature you control devours one or more creatures, proliferate.
Whenever you proliferate, put a -1/-1 counter on another target creature.

Devout and proliferate is actually a really nice combination of abilities since a single devoured creature makes a card eligible for benefits from proliferate like a mass-feeding of carrion hunters. Proliferating is a grant ability for a devour-ability lord. That part of the card is well done.

An obligatory warning against putting mechanics featuring +1/+1 counters and -1/-1 counters together on the same card. This is doing well by designing the card in such a way it cannot place both types on itself, but especially with proliferate the distinct counter annihilation rules matter. I'd think twice about using this the way it is.
I personally wouldnn't mind "Whenever you proliferate, you may remove a counter from a permanent or player."

Indeed no triggered ability takes effect or even goes on the stack until the triggering event has occurred, so this will e. g. always get to proliferate its own counters from devouring. I don't think that's necessarily a bug. Reminder text like "(The devouring creature gets its counters before you proliferate.)" may be in order is you feel that the interaction is missed too easily.

So part type-restricted Yawgmoth's Will/Yawgmoth's Agenda and part Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth, but also mentioning artifacts.

I feel the effect may still be too abusable without a restriction similar to the Agenda's, but going for that kind of effect is certainly a nice way to represent the power of the character. So overall a decent concept.

My suggestion would be to make the exile-clause a static ability that applies to all creatures/artifacts and not just the ones cast with this to avoid memory issues.

Can't tell if these are meant to be day-Lorwyn boggarts; the Lieutenant is a bit tall for boggart standards, right?

Boggarts look entirely different from any of the other Goblins in so many ways that it seems unlikely - also that clothing style and the concept of a Lieutenant don't make a good fit for Lorwyn boggarts. They just seem to be not from a plane/culture we know of yet - which is in itself exciting news.

It has the same mana cost as Blind Seer. The two cards are virtually indistinguishable.

I like the return of the artifact-matters Beast of Burden token we know from Karn already. Everything falling into place here.

The foe option is so devastating - especially with random discard potentially undoing the opponent's plan of attack - that the option is not relevant enough. Actually you could remove the foe option entirely and basically have a really similar interplay just due to the Group Hug aspect.

You know what would be cool?m Something like:

    Taersal, Contract Arbiter 3WB
Legendary Creature - Archon Advisor (M)
As ~ enters the battlefield each opponent chooses friend or foe.
Players that have chosen friend can't attack you or permanents you control.
If a player that has chosen foe would lose life, they lose twice that much life instead.

Bidding has such a long-winded wording. I wish, the word count for that card could be cut down.

I can't see Krenton as white. Sure he's an Artificer, but not an Esperite (he's not an artifact himself), and he's blue as well. Given what color past bid cards (and Menacing Ogre) have been, this feels absolutely like a UBR creature.

I thought the colors and token type were a reference to Assemble the Doomsday Machine, the three-colored Archenemy-deck. It doesn't help though that mechanically the card could easily be monoblack.

Ok, we don't get a Walker in every pack, but therefore there is the chance of getting multiple Walkers in one pack (which isn't possible in paper packs). I managed to open a "god pack" with 3 Planeswalkers yesterday! Smile

The "therefore" here is incorrect. It could easily have been that the eight card packs are sampled from a 15-card pack and you'd get at most one planeswalker. It's hence good to get confirmation that's not the case and multiple planeswalkerrs are possible. Thanks.

Either way, it's not going to live up to expectations. They need to pull out all the stops to make this set remotely worthwhile to buy beyond the first month after release, and they probably won't.

I think a large number of stops will suffice. And I suspect they'll put out a significant amount of stops, also having shown us already that they'll pull out a significant quality of stops.

I assume the set will live up to my expectations, but I am also optimistic that it won't live up to the expectations of the subset of the audience that expects an abolishment of the Reserved List every new set among their more realistic ideas. But I usually feel like unrealistic expecations are adequately rewarded in such cases.

If this functioned as a replacement effect rather than a trigger it would feel better. Like Lotus Vale.

  • posted a message on Face the Dreadhorde: Horde Magic Product
So... some of you may remember the product survey from a while ago when wizards asked (among other things) how we would feel about a product that is legal in modern and not in standard (AKA Modern Horizons).

Those of you with good memories, may also remember that the survey asked how we would feel about a cooperative play experience that pits multiple players against a deck that plays itself a la Horde Magic (not a direct quote, obviously).

Since that survey, Modern Horizons was revealed and War of the Spark notably invented "The Dreadhorde" across three colors, made a number of low-rarity creatures that give zombie tokens every keyword under the sun, and created the amass mechanic (which allows for normal semi-vanilla creatures to promote a "go wide" zombie strategy... and allows more varied spell effects to be tied to zombies... and gives us a gigantic zombie token).

While this is just speculation, it seems like a great opportunity for Wizards to finally produce a flavorful Horde Magic product. Heck, this might help explain why Bolas' forces don't get a PW deck with WAR.

So... am I just crazy or is it possible that I'm onto something?

Well, even if they don't make the product, the idea is now out there for anyone to ut together a Dreadhorde decklist. A drawback to such a supplemental product would be that they automatically would put in a lot of the new cards that they'd rather have players buy separately to build their deck. The Theros challenge decks were already a foray into Horde decks (though a Minotaur horde back then among those) and they didn't use normal creatures and spells for those decks.

I want to see it just to find out whether they again go the route of specialized cards or choose a normal deck playing itself by special rules. And it seems certainly a possibility as a follow-up to Archenemy: Nicol Bolas. Good speculation!

Storm scale is really just a rule waiting to be broken. Even those mechanics that’d “take a miracle to reappear” is literally just at their finger tip of MtG deities; themselves.
How would you break the storm scale? It's not a promise not to do something, it is a rough classification of mechanics sorted by how likely they are to return at a given moment in time (the scale getting update based on discussion etc.) Even an unlikely mechanic returning doesn't necessarily mean its classification changes (IIRC madness returned, because its stars aligned, but that has not been taken to mean the chances of the stars aligning again any time soon would be all that much greater).

And the probability for a "miracle" occuring approaches one as you look at a greater span of time. That's not the scale breaking. That's simply the reality of unlikely events still being possible.
