I'm glad that they printed all of the Odyssey era cards in a neutered form that were not even good enough for Modern in their former form.

Counterspell confirmed not to be in Horizons on stream. Press F to pay respects.

Already seeing apologists parroting that Counterspell is too good for Modern.

I can't even fathom a world in which that's true.

I have done a good job not being tilted for a good while...I think I'm losing that fight right now.

    Exactly my feel.

"Counterspell is too good. It can counter any spell." Lmfao.

Well I guess that settles whether or not we ever get Preordain.

Hopefully this does not mean Wizards is done scouring all possibilities, although it's probably nearly 100% at this point that Preordain won't see the light of day in Modern. Sad for many...

Maybe it means that they are going to Scour all Possibilities and see how it does; disclaimer: we know it will be pretty poor in Modern. The message is a bit cryptic too in that when we try to guess the future, it leads to many more questions.

Shroud is about a thousand times better than Hexproof.

Uh... isn‘t it the other way around? Since with Shroud, you can‘t pump, enchant or equip your creature.

I think he means that shroud is bad, but hexproof is worse.

Which one is "worse" to you really depends on what side of the coin you're on. So, it is very subjective which is worse … or better.

I sure hope price of progress isn't in horizons, seems so busted

This definitely seems like a fake. There's just no way that Burn would get a tool like Price of Progress or even something like Fireblast. Modern would be a 1 color format and the decks doing everything in their power to beat that.

Ugin's Conjurant + Celestial Kirin was a "concern", it seems. Uh...I mean, I was aware of the combo, but it seems like a waste of word count to mention it in the same sentence as Neoform or Karn.

    1) a round of applause for Gitaxian Probe, which managed to get banned in Modern, Legacy, Pauper, and the next closest thing to banned in Vintage
    2) I couldn't read "Augur of Bolas was still on the table for discussion" with a straight face. Full disclosure, I don't play Pauper, so the things that make Augur ban-worthy elude me. Then again, Bloodbraid Elf was once banned, so congratulations on not making the same mistake twice, I guess?

I feel the same way about Celestial Kirin/Ugin's Conjurant. Even though it is a 4 mana + 0 mana Armageddon, I can't imagine this deck doing all too much.

And Augur of Bolas. The other day when I got an FNM Promo (actually both weeks when I did), I mentioned that this is a terrible card. I still think it is a terrible card and I must have missed it when I skimmed through this B and R announcement.

@Spsiegel1987 - I wouldn't give up so soon. There are still cards to spoil and I have a feeling that Daze may be on the horizon. I really hope(d) not, but I think it has a shot. (I don't think it should have a shot, personally.)

23 person Modern Cash Invitational Qualifier.

Round 1 vs. Abzan Rector. Never seen this guy before. I have the nuts hand and go for a turn 1 Show and Tell Griselbrand. He puts Academy Rector into play. I groan inside my head, but I literally have no idea about what's going to happen. The next turn he does Cabal Therapy. I Force of Will it. Then he flashes it back. I consider drawing 7 with Griselbrand, but think "what's the worst that can happen?" I find out. He puts out a Overwhelming Splendor and since he doesn't have to target the Curse, I can't respond with a Griselbrand activation. It wouldn't have mattered anyway. I can't beat that. In the next game, I mull to 5 and have my hand stripped apart. Then he does the Academy Rector thing again on turn 5. He gets Omniscience and hard casts Curse of Death's Hold, the Humility Curse, and then Dovescape. GGs. I guess that's why they call it wrecktor? 0-2.

Round 2 vs. Eldrazi Aggro. This guy has won 2 Win-A-Dual Legacy tournaments with this very deck within the past month. I congratulated him last week at a tournament when I saw him. He's been killing it. Turn 1 Chalice of the Void for him. Then Eldrazi Mimic. I Show and Tell early and have an option of Emrakul or Griselbrand. I assume he has few outs to either, so Emrakul will end it sooner. In the next game, I turn 2 Blood Moon after turn 1 Chalice of the Void. He gets out a 2/2 Endless One and spanks me while I Force of Will hard cast 2 others. I finally use Abrade on the 2/2 Endless One while at 5, which I wanted to save for whatever he Show and Tells when I cast it since I had it AND Omniscience since forever. He said he was 2 lands away from Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger when I drew Sneak Attack and Emrakul, finally drawing Griselbrand 2 turns later to win. 2-0.

Round 3 vs. Mono Red Prison The dude had to play my 2 friends and I in Rounds 1-3. He drew because he took too long in Round 1 with my Miracles friend and then lost Rounds 2-3 to my friend and I on Sneak and Show. The games were pretty easy. I had the Combo and just had to let Chalice of the Void resolve and cast a Lotus Petal on turn 1 in case he had multiple Chalices on turn 1. Got there. 2-0.

Round 4 vs. UW Delver. He mulls to 5, but ends up getting there because I can't find Emrakul, the Aeon's Torn, but Snuck 4 Griselbrand to keep up with Batterskull. I Show and Told the Sneak Attack because I can beat Karakas easier and Council's Judgment can be Spell Pierced. The next 2 games were very tough and I can't remember all the details, but I ended up getting there. There was a part in the final game where he could have Wastelanded me and then when I fetch, win the counter war, as I resolved Sneak Attack. Then he Disenchanted it, but my last 2 cards were Sneak Attack and Emrakul. I drew Brainstorm for the turn and then won. I'm pretty sure I still win since I had plenty of mana to play around Disenchant with my 2nd Sneak anyway. 2-1.

Round 5 vs. Sneak Show. 0-0-3.

Top 8 vs. Bomberman. In the first game, he did Chalice of the Void on 1. Then, I Show and Tell Emrakul after he mulled to 6. I hoped it wasn't Auriok Salvagers, but it was. Then I hoped he didn't play Lion's Eye Diamond, but he did after casting Monastery Mentor. I thought he could do infinite Monks, but he didn't do it. He miscalculated and thought he could still do it the following turn for lethal. In the next game, he beats me with multiple Containment Priest, turn 1 Chalice of the Void, and freaking Cast Out. In the final game, I do Show and Tell, expecting Cast Out. I have Omniscience and get Emrakul to win as he only has … Karakas. Yeah buddy! This guy has also been killing it with this deck. 2-1.

Top 4 vs. UW Stoneblade. One of a group of 3 guys from my local store that came. Cool guy. In the first game, he misses some land drops and I hit them to save up for a big counterwar. I draw a 2nd copy of Show and Tell and believe it's the time. I go for it and sure enough, he Force of Will X 2 and Counterspell. I lose the war, but Show and Tell next turn with 3 Griselbrand in hand. I get there, easily racing the True-Name Nemesis that comes out next turn. In the next game, I consider Force of Willing while tapped out to resolve Sneak Attack. But I have to exile Arcane Artisan, which I think will win the game anyway. I am asked to speed up play since I tanked. I knew saving the Arcane Artisan was the play, but I Force of Will and he has no answer. Now I hope to dodge Council's Judgment + a counter for my FoW and he digs, digs, digs, and doesn't find it. Whew, thank God I let Narset, Parter of Veils resolve instead of Force of Willing. But he did get a Force of Will off it, so maybe that was wrong. It turns out he sided out both Council's Judgment. He's a really strong player, but hasn't played much Legacy. I don't actually know for sure what is the correct call here, but I've played against Stoneblade enough to know that they usually do leave it in and add Disenchant. 2-0.

Finals vs. Death and Taxes. He's one of the 3 guys from my shop. He's a very seasoned Death and Taxes player. When we play tested this matchup a year ago, he beat me 7 of 9 times, while I beat my friend 6 of 8 times on the same deck (not this friend). He just took out my friend on Sneak Show. We agree to split to leave early since 1st and 2nd BOTH get Invitations. That's mostly what I wanted; to be able to play in a bigger, more competitive tournament for big prizes. He actually scooped to me. 2-0.

I finally get there. 1st place!

I looked at your list and it's pretty certainly better in the current meta. Your list is more straight forward and basically a Midrange list that is going bigger by adding Gifts and Jace, the Mind Sculptor. This list is utilizing more of a toolbox at the cost of hurting one's mana.

But I personally think it is more fun. I know that's a subjective word. I personally don't enjoy Midrange much. The toolbox includes several cards that just DESTROY the opponent. It is much less a collective effort and that can be appealing to some players. I may also like Saheeli Evolution to be fair. I enjoyed Jeskai Saheeli for a while, as well as Vannifar Evolution more recently, so 4 Color may definitely be a blast to play for me.

But I will reiterate that I am more certain that by the looks of it, your deck list is way more streamlined to win in this current meta. I cannot deny that.

Surgical Extraction is also another way to get out Arclight Phoenix on turn 2 without the help of Manamorphose. It does not hurt Phoenix to run such a card and I don't think I've seen them in any other current Modern deck.

Dear lord do not buy any japanese cards until the supply hickup gets dealt with. It's really, really bad right now on War of the Spark and everything is inflated into oblivion.

Thanks. I was suuuuper tempted and put all kinds of planeswalkers into my cart on Ebay. Finally had the restraint to say **** it. I am still considering a play set of uncommons from Singapore. I know it's not the best place to buy cards from, especially out of a 52 rep seller, but it's available.

Oh yeah, most definitely. Although there are quite a few alternate art PWers I want, Narset, Parter of Veils is right at the top. Grin

What do you guys think about its current $15 price? Buy or wait?

There is nothing to fix about this meta. Make it better? Sure. I don't see any major issues, so even if you don't change anything, it seems great.
Does London mulligan change the picture and neoform or Tron look possible ban candidates? Maybe yes, maybe not. But that's about it.

Although it's one tournament, I can definitely see a potential problem in Neoform.

I 4-0ed FNM very, very easily. I did drop 2 games, compared with none when I ran Humans the week before, but the turn average was probably around 3 at the most. For reference, I did 3-0-1 with Elves the week before I ran Humans (beat Abzan Little Kid for funsies and the "4-0"), but previous to that, I 2-2, 1-3, and 2-2 with assorted decks at the same FNM. If you read my report in the Keanu Reeves (probably a terrible name) thread, my rounds 1 and 2 were hilarious. They were essentially hardly "Magic" rounds and understand this, I'm a Combo player saying this.

A couple of weeks ago, I revisited the Thomas Riedo GP Lyon Top 32 list. I was able to get the few last foils I needed to have 74 of the 75 foiled (missing a single Marsh Flats). It seems like a fun list, but I chickened out at FNM and played Humans instead, getting a 3-0-1.

I think at least in my own meta, that it may not be the deck to run. There are at least 2 players who run Gaddock Teeg main board, so without Path to Exile or Collective Brutality, this really slows us down.

Here is the list for reference -

I was looking for the thread for this deck. I almost made my own thread. I think we need to clarify that Keanu Reeves is a Neoform. deck. Anyways, I played the deck at a 15 person FNM - lowest one I've seen for Modern in 3 years. I feel like FNM is dwindling because Modern kind of sucks right now. I don't know if it's just me; maybe I need a break? But Modern seems pretty bad right now. Anywho, on to the results!

Round 1 vs. UW Spirits. The guy hasn't come in a while, but I know he's been playing. He always plays something interactive. I think this is the least interactive deck I've seen him play. We both mull, but he is at 3 mana, so I go for it before he has Cryptic Command mana next turn (I didn't know he was Spirits at the time). He does Spell Queller and I can't pay my Summoner's Pact next turn. In the next game, I turn 1 beat him before he can play a single card. In the final game, he mulls to 6. He does Island and Serum Visions. When I saw that land tap, I was hoping for a single Green card to go off. Yep, got a Manamorphose and went off on turn 1 again. 2-1.

Round 2 vs. Hardened Scales. The player finished 3-1, beating the UW Spirits player in the final round of this tournament. He usually does pretty well, but hasn't played at our spot in a while. In the first game, he does for Steel Overseer, then Mox Opal and Ancient Stirrings. I put out a Griselbrand and ride that easily to victory next turn. I leave it in play and then go for it next turn after a swing. In the next game, he mulls to 3. Haven't seen that in a while. I had a somewhat soft hand, but it had 2 Nature's Claim, so I kept it. Finally found a land and killed him after his only land, Forest, cast a Hardened Scales. 2-0.

Round 3 vs. Little Kid Abzan w/ Gaddock Teeg and Thalia, Guardian. He made the deck to NOT fold to Tron the way Little Kid normally does. It still has a rough matchup, but ways to win. Previous to him running Esper Control last week, he had won 3 FNMs in a row. OMG He does turn 2 Anafenza, the Foremost and then I kill him on my turn 2. Needed to find a land in the first 2 draw steps or Simian Spirit Guide. Got the Guide on turn 2 and Manamorphose to get Neoform mana. In the next game, he does turn 2 Thalia into turn 3 Gaddock Teeg and I can't find Pongify to go off a little bit. In the final game, I go off, but can't find the win. But I put Allosaurus Rider into play and have an 8/8 Griselbrand. I eventually get there as he floods the board, but on turn 7, I have 7 lands in play with Griselbrand, triple Allosaurus Riders, and a Laboratory Maniac with 8 cards left in deck. Barely got there. 2-1.

Round 4 vs. Humans. I loaned this deck to a friend, so we ID'd. Thank god. I tested this to be Neoform's worst matchup, followed closely by Grixis Shadow. 0-0-3.

Finish 3-0-1. It was a sweet deck for today and drew well. Not so sure how consistent it is though. We'll have to see.

*P.S. - I found out the reason that you run Dissenter's Deliverance rather than Nature's Claim. You can cycle it when you don't need it and that's suuuper important for a deck like this. Nature's Claim has probably led to more victories for me than any other single Modern card since 2012, so I'm a bit biased towards that card, lol. Dumb mistake though when I had 2 Nature's Claim in hand during the Round 3, Game 2 loss after siding in 2 Nature's Claim for potential Grafdigger's Cage or whatever (turned out he had Worship), but couldn't find the 2 Pongify or Rapid Hybridization. 4 Pact of Negation is probably NOT needed either, but I don't know what else to put. Suggestions?...

    14 person Staples tournament.

Round 1 vs. Lands. Although I didn't know until I saw the slip, I had a feeling this was the player that won the last Staples tournament here with Lands, procuring himself an Underground Sea. In the first game, I sculpt trying to find Griselbrand or Emrakul, the Aeon's Torn. I do and then Sneak it to kill his 4 lands, including the DD/Stage combo that came too late. In the next game, I get Blood Moon and then I also have Show and Tell Griselbrand. Had it all! 2-0.

Round 2 vs. Burning Wish Storm. I Show and Tell Griselbrand on turn 2 after he does turn 1 Ponder. It was vulnerable to discard, but he didn't know what I was on and I saw him beat my friend in Round 1. In the next game, I can't find a dude, but he made me discard some stuff. I draw Leyline of Sanctity and Show and Tell it into play. He goes off 2 turns later with 2 Burning Wish, 1 getting Void Snare to bounce my Leyline and the other to find Tendrils of Agony for game. I needed to draw some countermagic in 2 draw steps. The same thing happened in the next game. I needed Show and Tell or Sneak Attack, but drew 2 more Emrakuls. I die to Ad Nauseam again. 1-2.

Round 3 vs. UR Delver. The friend I drove with. In the first game, he doesn't have much countermagic and Griselbrand races True-Name Nemesis and 2 Delver. The next game is similar, but I draw Boseiju, Who Shelters All on the first turn and play it on turn 2 tapped so I can Show and Tell next turn. Griselbrand again and I get there. Good draws. 2-0.

Round 4 vs. Eldrazi Post. He agrees to scoop to me since he's 1-2 and can't make it. I ask him if he wants to play for fun after I go to the bathroom. I should have signed the damn slip! He changes his mind twice and then thinks that 3-2 can make Top 4, which it doesn't. We play it out. I Show and Tell on turn 2, putting Griselbrand into play. He puts Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger into play. I try to find cards, but eventually have 7 cards in library with 2 scryed to the bottom that have 2 Omniscience, so I can't Omniscience in Emrakul and I die to milling. In the next game, I turn 2 Blood Moon, but he has turn 2 Grim Monolith off 2 Eldrazi Temple "Mountains." Then he does Sorcerous Spyglass on my Sneak Attack, followed by double Thought-Knot Seer. I draw Omniscience this time. Sweet! 0-2.

Round 5 vs. UR Delver. In the first game, I get Wastelanded 3 times, so I'm slowed down. But he has no pressure and I eventually jam Show and Tell to find he has only 2 Spell Pierce in hand. He flooded out badly. In the next game, he gets there with pressure, Pyroclasm gets a few creatures, but he gets me with triple Spell Pierce. I pay, then Force of Will, then I can't pay the 3rd one. In the final game, I am kept off lands again for a while, but jam a few Show and Tells when I finally find something to Show. I get there with a Griselbrand, racing Delver and Young Pyromancer. 2-1.'

I finish 3-2 and miss the top 4. Sad times, especially considering my Round 4 opponent offered the scoop. I guess I didn't expect him to change his mind. OMG Gotta play more ruthlessly.
