I mean, given that the number of people who emphasize with humans is, in all likelihood, higher than the number of people who emphasize exclusively with non-humans, I find it kind of interesting that you'd try to argue it is inaccurate. But given that it's a point that WotC has made it makes sense from that angle.

And while I may not emphasize with humans over non-humans, I can certainly understand the sentiment. It's weird that people aren't able to emphasize with a point of view outside of their own, but given that's rather literally what is being discussed (being able to emphasize with other humans) it doesn't surprise me.

I hope not, not really a fan of artifacts. Granted so long as I have a deck I like it's not really all that important. But yeah, they can easily repeat themes and it's not going to break things. There are more than enough Commander themes they could do it for ages. Not even counting new themes that can be introduced as time goes on.

I mean, you're still attempting to use anecdotal evidence as an argument and not providing anything stronger to back it up.

And you say that, but Maro says that Jace was most popular out of the Lorwyn Five from the beginning. It's a positive feedback loop yes, you're just acting like they were unpopular to begin with and only made that way over time, as though WotC would arbitrarily decide to promote unpopular characters for no reason.

Hmm. I mean, probably the favorite was Theros? I guess? It's hard to say. I don't really play blocks so much, but I go to prereleases sometimes and I vaguely recall enjoying the Theros prerelease? It's been a while though.

Its not that nonhumans aren't popular look around and its obvious they are. Its that Humans are MORE popular/liked. While a minority is always unhappy because the majority is being favored, in this instance they are trying to be as reasonable as possible. They make nonhumans 'sometimes' but the majority are humans because the majority like humans better than nonhumans. They've heard the cry of the minority and are trying to accommodate them but as seen right here even what constitutes nonhuman among the players that want nonhumans varies.

I would argue that that's not even true. Humans in Magic are more popular because they get more screentime and all. Non-human characters are usually relegated to the sidelines or are one-offs. It's a positive feedback loop thing. Give character A more exposure -> character A becomes more popular -> fans ask for more of A.

Humans aren't inherently more liked or popular, it all depends on how the cast is presented. Take Pokemon for example. Nobody really cares about the humans in the games (or movies). People care about the real stars, the pokemon. Or even Alien, even the most popular human character in the franchise does not even come close to the popularity of the Xenomorph.

A positive feedback loop still relies on the initial starting point. It's not like we had a dearth of nonhuman characters prior to humans being popular.

You're also arguing based on your own personal opinion against the research WotC has done on the matter, while comparing two rather wildly different franchises to try and make the point. Pokemon and Alien are both named after the non human entities, they're clearly the focus. That doesn't mean that generally humans aren't more popular (bear in mind that none of those franchises are devoid of humans) or even that in the specific case of MtG that non humans are more popular.

Eh, I don't agree with any of that. Killing off Bolas wouldn't really be all that great, both from a narrative sense and a moral sense being imprisoned without power is a better end. And he in general has always been a weak villain, acting like this is somehow a new thing is rather silly. They just were trying to make the most of a bad character.

It's not lazy. It's a sensible title for Ugin. That people like to build stuff out of nothing (which yes, this is an example of) isn't on the Creative team. People do that all the time.

I'm looking forward to more Yanling and Kasmina. Not terribly excited for the twins but I'm sure they'll be neat enough. Though I do have to wonder what about the plans they have for these characters (and Garruk as another example) that precludes them from being in War of the Spark.

There are still plenty of ways they can go, I'm not sure why anyone would worry about them not having ideas. Further Commander is the chance to print cards for Commander, that would be hard (if not impossible) to print otherwise.

    Doug on twitter (sorry don't have a link handy) said they knew this and picked anyways because;

    1) It fits Ugin

    2) After 25 years of cards and lore you start to run out of names and epithets and Yawgmoth was never called the ineffable on a card
I had a hunch this was the reason, I don't like being right on this.

I mean, it's kind of the sensible answer.

Svai-lune is how I would pronounce it. And looking at the cards associated with her makes me sad, those are some pretty blah cards for the most part.

Eh, Maybe is Maro's default response. While there is some noteworthy aspects with what he chooses to respond it's really up in the air how meaningful any given maybe is.

And Kamigawa is popular enough for a Commander deck. A Standard set is more up in the air, but for a Commander deck I could very easily see it. Given what WotC stance on planes derived from different cultures is I also really don't want to see another Japanese set aside from Kamigawa.

Reminder ugin, the ineffable static ability does not fit well with war of the spark there’s only 9 cards in the whole set that interact with that static ability

I speculated recently it’s a foreshadow of a colorless involved thing was coming

It’s definately not the first time some cards/products foreshadow something in the future

edgar Markov foreshadowed white vampires with tribal support in Ixalan since mostly rakdos has the vampires and not much in white before Ixalan heck ravnica brought even more white vampires in orzhov

Besides most of time when maro gives the “maybe :)” responses it usually happens like he gave the “maybe :)” response for slivers in modern horizons

I'm not saying it's impossible, but Ugin wouldn't have to be any more foreshadowing a Commander product than he would be making use of past products. Some cards aren't made for Standard, but that still leaves a wide range of options for where it could fit. It's also entirely possible (not likely, but possible) he's foreshadowing something in Standard proper.

I was hoping this story would be the end of the Gatewatch era of Magic, but that ending with all the oaths caused me more despair than 65 chapters of Bolas sitting on his throne killing scores of nameless people... uh... more in my sig.

If you thought that then you simply weren't paying attention. This was the end of Bolas, not the Gatewatch. The Gatewatch is very successful, until it ceases to be well liked don't expect it to go away.

Except it isn't definitely the end of Bolas, they put him on ice. They brought him back once before from what we thought was actually dead, so explicitly not killing him off all but ensures he will return.

I also wonder how popular the gatewatch actually is. For people who care about the story I mean. There are plenty of people who like the cards but don't know much about the story.

It's the end of him as a focus for the time being, not the end as in forever. It should be rather clear contextually what I meant if you're paying attention to the story, but if you're not I'll be more explicit next time. Smile

And the Gatewatch, according to data we can look at, seem to be popular at least on an individual level. As a group it's probably a bit harder to measure, but if it wasn't popular I'm sure Wizards would just go back to the old format (which really wasn't all that different from what's currently going on anyways, speaking of stuff Alara onward for reference). The Gatewatch are just the result of a positive feedback loop from what I can see though, so it's not surprising.

Also I'm glad Ugin is so popular, if a bit surprised. Makes me hopeful that they'll show him doing more, he's been pretty background for now.
