Pauper Review: Dominaria

The Limited Archetypes of Dominaria

I've been on and off 2 Field of Ruin in my Azcanta Queller list; they're not free, especially versus fast aggro decks. They're an option to run, but don't think 2 lands will somehow magically fix the big mana matchups; they'll still be unfavoured.

Relatedly, I just added the Gxtron, Eldrazitron and Storm matchups to the OP

I don't know how mtggoldfish does their stats if a single tournament influences their standings that much. But regardless that doesn't change that not making top 8 is not in any way a sign that we're doing poorly

Well sorry but you're just wrong in that case, it's always a matter of sample size in a single event so IF you want to assess anything, day 2 conversion is the best to look at. Top 8 conversion is basically noise; Gerry Thompson's mardu list had an awful conversion rate for example. Also important is that our poor matchups had a low showing

Top 8 conversion means nothing, it's too small of a sample to be in any way significant

IIRC we had a 73% day 2 conversion rate, which is really impressive

So the pro tour results were I think quite favourable for us: big mana got completely stomped, and although jeskai did not get far, it had a good conversion rate. The decks that did go far were either swarm decks or lantern, which we can make quite favourable postboard. The one UR control deck that got far really just got punked out vs mardu tokens but clearly had a good standing vs the field

I only just took out stony silence and izzet staticaster out of my sideboard but I guess they are back in.

At first hand I would say SFA is too slow for Nahiri builds and Nahiri doesn't really rely on card advantage, but a more long range Nahiri build without the full playset of Nahiri that can search her with a flipped SFA might be interesting.

I far prefer fighting affinity over humans; I dislike arguing matchup percentage as I think it's more useful to discuss HOW to beat a deck, but I do think humans is rougher than affinity (not unfavourable though). It's definitely a case of familiarity; I've played vs affinity countless times by now but humans only maybe eight to ten matches. Without vial they do not have the velocity to overwhelm our removal but with vial it gets difficult.

I'm going to try out Abrade in the side, it seems basically perfect for tge matchup. I've also been thinking about bringing in Celestial Purge as even though it's narrow it does hit freebooter and mantis rider, and having several types of different cheap removal spells works around meddling mage.

They have very powerful disruption with meddling mage, freebooter and thalia combined. With a vial on 2 you also constantly have to be wary of them flashing in a leutenant in response to burn or meddling mage in response to snap targeting. Once the original onslaught is over they have to rely on horizon canopy to get back in which generally means you win, but their clock is as fast as affinity backed up with much better disruption.

What do you think about Spell Queller? They run barely any removal and it can block somewhat decently given they can't vial Thalia's Leutenant in, so it's potentially worth a lot of life and card advantage, but it is also very slow. I'm considering taking them out on the draw but leaving them in on the play. I'm also assuming they take out Reflector Mage vs us.

I've been putting a lot of rounds in versus humans and boy that deck can get really spicy. If they do not have the turn one vial it's quite manageable but otherwise turn four wraths are often just too late through all their disruption. I often feel like I have too many cards to cut; basically all countermagic can come out except for maybe a singleton spell snare and cryptic, queller can't block very well and is too slow. Even Electrolyze seems really medium versus the deck. I might just try and fit the fourth lightning helix in the 75 as it is our best card against them and I feel this matchup is just all about trading 1 for 1 as their individual cards are all kind of mediocre

I feel this deck and tropical merfolk are the reasons you could convince me to play Abrade.

Yeah, I've been looking at Abrade as well. Relying on Stony or Wear/Tear to kill Vial is risky because you need every card you can get versus the vial decks. I will probably end up cutting Runed Halo, it hasn't performed that well.

My reasoning with Stony Silence is that I expect to take out thraben inspector against the decks where I want stony (affinity and tron). I have been uncertain of smugglers copter however, so perhaps I will run selfless spirit over copter to validate the sideboard stonies a bit more.

The Gelid Shackles spice is not my own, I saw it in a DnT list and liked how it answers both manadorks and huge fatties. However I also kind of want to fit in oblivion ring, which would probably go in over thr shackles, so Im not 100% certain yet.

Hey y'all, I've been playing modern DnT proxied and on free programs for a bit now (the monowhite version to be exact) and I'm considering finally buying into it. I'd like to hear some input on my first list. Apologies for any incorrect formatting as Im on my phone

I REALLY dislike crumble, it's too slow and mostly irrelevant versus eldrazi, and useless against valakut unless they drop valakut itself prematurely which is sonething good pilots will avoid doing. It's only good versus tron but even then it can be too slow and they can use ghost quarter to protect themselves.

@kodieyost: I wouldn't really board in extra counterspells vs liliana decks in the first place, would you side in Negate or Disdainful Stroke against those?

@theAller: your mainboard list is very similar to mine, I have -1 Helix -1 Cryptic for +1 Snare +1 Clique now. I've also been trying to be a little greedy and run 2 Field of Ruin over where you have Sulfur Falls (rest of the manabase exactly the same). It has helped me out way more than it has hurt me so far.
