I made a post on a facebook group called modern meta masters shortly after the PPTQ a couple weeks ago and was provided the link below. Pretty interesting, has a lot of decklists of other sliver players who've topped in a tournament somewhere.
Thanks for link, this will be realy helpful.
WU Spirits 2-0
Both games won with combination of Cavern, Sedge, Swamp and Syphon. Opponent had rather poor hand both times.
RG Ponza 2-0
Game 1 I start, opponent had perfect hand, turn 1 forest - arbor elf, turn 2 shock land, two enchantments on forest, bird of paradise and blood moon, turn 3 another arbor and dragon with monstrous and haste. I went with turn 1 mutavault-vial, turn 2 hive, diffusion, vial in galerider, turn 3 land only. Turn 4 I went with ridiculous play - vial in necrotic, sac galerider and destroy forest. All of sudden he was unable to get back from that. Game 2 I raced him, Inferno Titan could not kill my slivers due to Diffusion.
WB Smallpox 0-2
Both games opponent kept me on none to 1-2 lands from start, no vial, hand disrupted, planeswalkers on board.
I had a tough night at FNM...
27 players (4 capped rounds)
Round 1 - Ad Nauseum, 1-2. Kept a poor hand in game 1 and was punished thoroughly. Game 2 I saw my boarded in Harmonic and destroyed all of the mana rocks. Game 3 was the interesting one. Opponent got several rocks out but couldnt go off for a while, eventually went off to Lightning Storm but I had 2 lands in hand and a Diffusion in play, I had to use both lands to redirect and still had 1 card left in hand and opponent had 3 more mana so if he pays I die. He doesnt pay for the second Diffusion trigger and allows the Storm to be countered and then uses his 3 mana to cast Laboratory Manaic and wins by forcing a draw card.
Round 2 - Gixis Shadow, 2-1. Game 1, slivers did slivery things... got wide and was a pretty easy game. Game 2, got stuck at 3 lands with a Hivelord in hand and it never came down. Game 3 was a pretty good game, waited til my opponent tapped out to cast CoCo and hit exactly what I needed to take away his last 4 life.
Round 3 - Death & Taxes, 1-2. Game 1 I kept what I thought to be a GOD hand, 2 Predatory 2 Sinew, 1 Sedge Cavern Hive... a turn 3 Ghost Quarter with a Leonin Arbiter ruined any chance of winning this game. Game 2, mulled to 5 cards and kept a 1 lander with a vial, managed to top a land and followed that up with lords and a coco, swung for 26 on turn 5. Game 3, fell prey to a Dusk/Dawn removing my 3 slivers and leaving a Mirran Crusader alone on the board.
Round 4 - RG Titanshift, 0-2. Lost to back to back turn 3 Anger of the Gods. Saw it coming but could do nothing to prevent them.
Still had a good time playing, but didnt have the luck required to win.
Hey, I was the one who finished 13th with Slivers. I'm still very unfamiliar with the formatting so I haven't posted the report on here yet, but I did post something to Reddit which I will link below. I should have the reformatted Reddit post finished tonight to post here though if you would prefer to wait and see it here.
Got a report from Monday, wont be a full one due to time constraints.
Match record 3-0-1
Game record 6-2-3
Round 1, Bant Knightfall company 2-1. Early Galerider sealed game 1 quickly. Lack of a 5 color land killed me game 2. Game 3 swung back in my favor with an early CoCo when he had no queller mana up.
Round 2, Mono White Death and Taxes, 2-0. Both games ended with both of us getting pretty wide and me top decking a galerider to finish the game. Game 2 I found telekinetic and tapped down 4 of his creatures on his upkeep and killed the following turn.
Round 3, Eldrazi tron, 2-1. Game 1 simply rode a galerider to victory, eldrazi are good but they dont fly well. Game 2 he landed a grafdiggers cage the turn before I could CoCo and top decked another CoCo. Game 3 was pretty epic, he dropped a cage the turn before I could CoCo but I didnt give up, got to a point where I had 6 lands and a manaweft, top decked harmonic blew up the cage and then CoCo'd for 2 Sedges and followed it up the following turn with galerider.
Round 4, Grixis Shadow, INTENTIONAL DRAW. We did play a 3 game match it went 2-1 in his favor. Couldnt build a board in game 1, got super wide game 2, and he got wide in game 3.
After this was over I decided to remove the 1 copy of Venom Sliver from my sideboard. It was only in there to deal with Eldrazi and I didnt even bring it in against them. It will be replaced with Screeching Sliver since I've had such trouble with Lantern lately.
Excellent job on the matches. It does look like Death Shadow can be a problem. if we can get ahead of their removal and discard we can do well. However, our traditional method of dealing with midrange/control is to grind it out via sliver hive and 30+ creatures or win fast with coco.
I feel this method isn't going to get us as far as I would like against GDS. We need to come up with a play. Obviously we can get mismatches in their hands, but I feel it relies on the types of hands they have. Lots of discard into threat is hard to deal with and we have little answer to that. Lots of removal, but no discard can be handled by diffusion sliver if we have it for awhile while we build up. Lots of DS, TAS, and Anglers with a couple pieces of disruption can be utterly devestating.
Any ideas of what we can improve the DS matchup with. Sentinel Sliver is an option. I like Venom in the matchup as a trick, but it might not be able to do the job. I like Darkheart to help grind out, but we still don't have a solution. Hivelord can work, but it can be rough to get through with the disruption.
I don't think the grixis shadow matchup is that bad. Its not easy by any means, but it feels a lot better than the Jund Death Shadow. If youre having a bad time versus them, the Chameleon Collossus Ekienhol brought up is really hard for them to deal with. I dislike Venom, it never does what I want it to do.
Combo and big mana decks are still my biggest problems. And I mean combo in the broadest of terms; not just storm but also stuff like Counters Company. We just lack interaction to deal with their combo unless playing a hefty amount of warping wail in the side.
Concerning Eldrazi Tron and Titanshift, Telekenetic Sliver feels like the best card against them. Making them have no mana in their main phase just shuts them down for the most part. Odds are still great the 4 mana sliver will come too late though.
Anyone tried Ghostflame Sliver? I saw NaPaulm mention it in his SB discussion on reddit and was wondering if the card does enough to earn a SB slot. My mind says no, but I would really love to play that card.
Ghostflame Sliver helps us against only 3 things in modern. It helps against Ugin, All is Dust, and Etched Champion. Etched Champion is handled by mutavaults fairly well and Mutavaults can also handle Ugin and All is Dust. All is Dust can be handled by Warping Wail which has utility against Scapeshift decks of all sorts, Sun and Moon unless blood moon comes down, Counters Company, Storm, and a few other decks including Death and Taxes or decks with important sorceries like GR Ponza.
Round 1 Storm. Win 2-1
Game 1: He mulligans to 5. I keep a nice hand but in turn 3 miss play put a counter in Vial, two turn later with he down to 3 and me with a lord, 2 mutas and necrotic made his combo.
Game 2: Again he mulligans to 5 and i go aggro. Turn 5 win.
Game 3: He was floading and I only had to put muta and lords.
Round 2 Titan-Valakut. Win 2-1
Game 1: No great start and he played titan turn 5.
Game 2 and 3: He had to kill my guys but I put more than he can kill.
Round 3 Red destroy. Win 2-0
Many permanet destroy (Lux cannon and crack the earth) with lupine prototype
Game 1: Three turns with land or permanet destruction when he slow down I played muta, lord, vial and a hand full of guys. Really close.
Game 2: He mulligans to 5 but never found gas enought, only a blood moon and I destroy with harmonic.
Round 4 Relicary - devoted druid. Lose 1-2
Game 1: Two nice CoCo and a Necrotic made me win.
Game 2: He go infinite in turn 3.
Game 3: In play with a tormod's, Pithing Needle, two lords, and the two Rising miasma, no found black mana in 5 turns so his guys eat me.
Round 5: Living end. Lose 0-2
Turn 5 living end in both. GG.
So with a better luck in round 4 I think it's allmost 4-x, but I'm happy. I didn't make to many missplays.
And one cuestion, how defeat Living End? only relic or tormod's its enought?
Copter is not a great modern card
3/3 looter flyer for 2 which needs setup and taps your creature every turn
Its not widely adopted in Merfolk and I doubt it will be
You need a deck to minimize its drawback and payoff is not big (Bitterblossom, Lingering Souls?)
Threat density is one of the strength of Fast Slivers and Copter I think will ruin that. Many games I won I was just one step ahead of grindy decks like Jund or some Control. Copter will allow them to stabilize much earlier. Also it breaks synergy of the deck with all creatures being lords. Looting isnt needed much: random lord is a lord and a land brings Sliver Hive activation closer
Btw traditional slivers arent in good shape and I believe Fast Slivers is still a better deck
Its not widely adopted in Merfolk and I doubt it will be
The debate is out there, but merfolk players like Jonathan Zaczek (Nikachu on youtube) and Petr Sochurek are big fans of the card in Merfolk so far. It has performed really well in many videos too. However, part of the charm with the card for merfolk is that it answers flying threats and stuff like Etched Champion, which we already can deal with with our Slivers. So it might not be a good comparison in the first place.
As for all your other arguments, they are probably true for the Fast Slivers deck. I can still see it work in the traditional list, however, as falling behind on resources is the biggest problem you can have in that deck and the 'sliver' options in Dormant and Opaline are just worse cards. Im not saying this will be the next big thing, Im not even saying it will be 'a' thing. But it could be worth a shot, in practice games.
I think that ghostflame is too narrow, but I had a foil one and considered using it. Mutavaults only block etched champion if you remember that you have them too (still can't believe I forgot about the 3 I had in play). I am going to an IQ today and am running pretty much the same 75 except that I have -1 Dormant Sliver, -1 Psionic Sliver, +2 Warping Wail in the sideboard.
Dominaria could have Slivers. Rosewater said Slivers will come back eventually so who knows?
As for Crystalline, doubtful. The abillity isnt used anymore. On top of that, it seems Wizards isnt a fan of hexproof atm either. And it's a very powerful card for the current powerlvl they want in Standard. One can hope though!
I choose to believe there will be slivers on Dominaria, the last time the game was on Dominaria was the Time Spiral block and it seemed at the time that Slivers were the only things thriving on the dying plane. This return is supposed to be after a few years during the recovery from the mending. I'd wager not only will there be slivers but there should be a great deal of slivers. Since Dominaria will immediately be followed by a Core set I'd also be willing to wager we find out how slivers made it to Shandalar (the m14/m15 slivers).
