Word of Command: Un-believable

There are cards like Jiwari, the Earth Aflame that require compromising on how they're designed and poor Haakon, Stromgald Scourge which can't do anything at all.
Command Beacon solves all of the problems with commanders that really want to be in your hand at some point. (Once he's in your hand, Haakon is pretty easy to get into the graveyard.) Command Beacon was the reason I built Iname as One.

There are also a number of cards with no color identity that can recur lands from your graveyard, if you want to reuse Command Beacon (Petrified Field, Crucible of Worlds, Reito Lantern, Junktroller, etc.)

None of the Killbots or Mary are Hosts.
    Here's a construction:
    - Two Hosts in play (let's say Adorable Kitten and Mer Man, just as something to reference)
    - Arcane Adaptation naming Killbot
    - Activate an augment ability (let's say Ninja) targeting Mer Man
    - Respond by switching Mary with Mer Man
    - Still in response to the augment, switch Mary with something like Shapesharer
    - Still in response to the augment, activate Shapesharer to make itself an Adorable Kitten
    - Ninja's ability resolves on the Shapesharer Adorable Kitten, forming a Ninja Kitten
    - At your next turn, Shapesharer's copy effect ends
    What do?

The intention behind Mary's ability is "Ha-ha! The killbot was actually Mary all along!" or "Ha-ha! Mary was actually a killbot all along!"

Considering the reminder text on the card even talks about keeping various states after the switch, combined with the intended design, it doesn't make sense for ETB triggers to occur.

I've been playing MTG since July 2017. I have no idea realy what errata is other than I'm guessing based of this thread it means cards that have been reprinted with updated rules text.
Close. An erratum is a correction to published text, not necessarily accompanied with a reprint of that text. While a card which receives errata and is later reprinted will have the corrected text printed on the new version, receiving errata is not sufficient to get a reprint. The point of the Oracle database is to be a reference for errata.

Regarding Food Chain, it combos with Eternal Scourge or Misthollow Griffin and any commander with an ETB/Cast trigger that can win the game.
While not infinite, Food Chain is also pretty bonkers in Maelstrom Wanderer.

rarity on cards like contraptions is fairly pointless
    Uh... no it isn't?

If you run enough artifacts, then blinkmoth urn is also a second mana doubler. However, this one can seriously backfire!!
Might as well make it one-sided. Smile

You could ignore the tutoring altogether and run it with Boris Devilboon and discard outlets.

If you're not doing that, you don't really need too many demons for this to be decent value. It would certainly be a lot better if it tutored on ETB though.
And that's how you brew right. Cool

  • posted a message on How to win with The Grand Calcutron
I've got a Grand Calcutron list here, but I'm having trouble figuring out how I can reliably win with it.

The basic concept is to use suspend/cycling to bypass my commander's restriction on which card in my hand I can play, with discard effects to change what's at the head of my program after already adding the cards to my hand. My commander then refills me to 5 cards in hand, so even card disadvantage like Alexi, Zephyr Mage and Attunement is strong. (Alexi is also great for gumming up my opponents' programs.)

The problem is that, right now, actually winning the game seems difficult. Beyond beating face with things like Deep-Sea Kraken, I don't have much. Ideas welcome.

This could have Major price implications on certain cards.
If Version X of Very Cryptic Command is the "BEST" one by far, it's either going to be a chase rare, or 6 times as rare. On average, a specific mythic shows up about 1/2 as often as a rare (50 rares in 7/8th of packs = ~1 in 60 packs vs 13 rares in 1/8 pack is 1 in 1:104 packs) variance in small set versus large set of course.
This could be even more insane in rarity of foils. For example, if I want "Extremely Slow Zombie" in Christmas format, a normal foil common might cost 50 cents but this could make price go up exponentially. Star City has The Zombie at 9 cent commons versus $.99 foils for example. Very Cryptic Command are running $.99 each versus $30 for foil version.
Yes. You can already see foil Very Cryptic Command A (the sketch art variant) has skyrocketed, but part of that is because the artist died February 2016.

    That's why!

I couldn't figure out why the price was skewed other than it was a sketch. I thought it was some weird joke WotC was trying to do.

Or some hefty interaction with another card that cared about art/artist/color/whatever.

Or people really really liked sketch art for some weird reason.

I had no idea the artist died. Frown
He's also the artist for the original Cryptic Command, and the Player Rewards full-art Cryptic Command, so I'm sure that has something to do with it as well.

Metalworker, Voltaic Key, Clock of Omens, etc.

Ramp like these are how I have in the past cast both Ulamogs in my Karn deck after getting all of my lands destroyed.

The other Un set basics are nicer.
I agree. I prefer Unhinged basics to Unstable basics, and my one Commander deck that I've foiled out has foil Unhinged lands.

My question is on that reverted part, since Liliana, Defiant Necromancer is reverted back into Liliana, Heretical Healer but you had to exile Liliana, Heretical Healer so she can become Liliana, Defiant Necromancer .
The whole "exile" part is simply a way to ensure that Defiant Necromancer has the correct starting loyalty. They could have printed Heretical Healer to say "Transform Liliana, Heretical Healer and put 3 loyalty counters on it."

The way they templated it also means that the five Origins walkers also work with the Oath cycle of enchantments (Gideon, Chandra, and Liliana, specifically), which were almost assuredly already in development before the Origins walkers were finalized.

Using BB as a Mana Geyser substitute for infinite mana combos? It costs more...and requires way more lands...but does generate infinite artifacts?

Oh, man, I hope there are bounty cards for each tribe/color. Like when they had the expertise cycle!

Buybacking Reiterate cost 6, so casting Brass's Bounty with 7 seven lands should make infinite artifacts, no?
Sure, if you've got 13+ mana to start with. You get infinite Treasures, which can be infinite mana.
