My sideboard alt wincon bombs have been a Jace AoT and Gideon AoZ for a while now, they have been excellent. I run PnK I my flash list as I can rebuy them with Resto and Venser but in the geist list I think there are more influential sideboard cards; PnKs big upside is that they are strong both in grindy games and versus affinity, but affinity should already be a great matchup

Hi everyone. I'm looking for some clarification on threads here. I've been checking the old UWR Midrange thread, expecting to see a lot of activity as my favorite deck has been doing pretty well as of late. I'm finally realizing that the Jeskai Geist discussion has moved here. I always thought of this thread as the almost no creatures Draw Go and/or Nahiri Control versions of Jeskai, as the other thread has always been the more tempo/midrange/Geist version of the deck. It seems like this thread is the, whatever version of Jeskai is popular at the moment, which is fine if that's how people want it, but I thought it made sense to keep the creature versions (midrange/tempo) separated from the non creature versions (control). Is there an official word on which thread we should be using?

I think the archetypes have drifted close to eachother and the most effective deck currently is kind of this inbetween version; very low on creatures, more control based, but with a fast burn backup plan and of course Geist which has always been the namesake of the midrange lists. Personally I think good discussion is much more important than in what thread said discussion should be held, so if this one is more active I'd love to see your input here

23 lands 3 colonnades is fine.

I'm running 4 opt 2 serum visions myself in my geist list, with the reasoning that although i want SV's power for long games, Opt's flexibility is better early and snap opt is just an excellent way to pressure

You do need some creatures to actually have a clock; taking out Geist for more spells like that will leave you unable to close out the game. I run Venser over cryptic because even though cryptic is better in a vacuum you just need some cards to actually kill your opponent with

Logic Knot might just be a stroke of bad luck but gravehate is just very popular now. I'm on 3 now, I could cut down one for a Negate instead

I've been testing a flash build with 4 snap 4 queller 2 clique 2 resto 2 venser as the creature base, it has been an absolute blast to play. I'll post the full list later.

On the other hand, logic knot is letting me down a lot lately, getting shut down by gravehate, making land drops iffy or forcing me to exile things I'd rather flashback later. I might just go back to mana leak.

Search for Azcanta is so slow though, I'd only want it in very grindy matchups. Do you think you would mainboard it? I'd earlier think sideboard, but if that's the case I think I'd rather have some bomb planeswalkers

I agree with theAller here, counterflux is definitely a strong card versus them. Just don't blindly go all-in on it and think about what to do if they do have remand. Gravehate should also severely cripple them and at the least force them to go for Empty the Warrens. I still think the most important skill vs storm is knowing how to deal with Gifts Ungiven

And of course, yes, if they respond with x but you have y they could still have z but that hypothetical goes on forever, you play to the highest percentage but that percentage is never 100% regardless of matchup. Just two days ago I lost to UB rogue tribal with my jeskai flash build :p

Keranos is only faster if you're drawing non-lands for every trigger. In any case, good luck to you if you're running Keranos. I'm with CodyX on this one. It's straight up bad.

And even that's not true lol, Sunny Elspeth's soldiers outrace Keranos easily even if you get a bolt every turn

Keranos saw play because UR decks saw play and used it, jeskai took over their tech

Burn should be an easy matchup if you play correctly, both spell queller and lightning helix are busted against them. Just keep fast hands, respect skullcrack effects and think carefully about how you plan your land drops

affinity should generally be a bye especially now most lists run electrolyze but sometimes you just get etched champion'd; it's kind of the only relevant card in their deck vs us

Storm is really tough as they essentially present lethal starting from turn 3 onward and gifts makes it hard to get a clock down even at instant speed. I'm fairly certain it is often correct to just slam some threat as early as possible and let them have it because otherwise they can just spend their time sculpting their hand and gather resources. You also have to actively practice gift piles because even though it tends to look like you're boned no matter what you give, there are a lot of percentages to gain there

Delver Peezy Queller as the creature base of a jeskai tempo list actually does sound really fun. Your curve kind of has to end at 4 quellers after that though

I can't believe this. Peter Ingram took Nahiri control to a top 8 finish at SCG Classic Charlotte. I watched that guy flub wins away against aggro decks, but somehow he's making Nahiri control work. WTF?!

Are SCG events really that bad as far as the level of competition or is something else going on?

    Here is the list if people are interested;
    https://www.mtggoldfish.com/deck/794645#paper

Obvious to say one results means absolutely nothing, but I'm always excited to see results with Nahiri because honestly it's my favourite version of the deck to play. 4 colonnades, cryptics over wraths and 4 sv no opt is interesting

I've found against Eldrazi Tron, Vizier Elves (what do we call this?) and Abzan, Geist isn't exactly the best plan. When it comes to these known tier decks, Flash Jeskai seems to be better for me in those instances. Vendilion Clique is particularly good for me against Eldrazi Tron as well. I'm not saying leave Geist at home for them because I still need a way to kill my opponent, but having flash and some info is generally as good or better than trying to rely on the Geist plan for me. To each, their own I guess.

I think you are absolutely right about geist being a lousy wincon vs decks like Etron. But i think this deck ends up just needing the big dumb beatstick at the end of the day as it does not have enough burn in it to rely on it entirely but not enough card advantage to reliably outgrind. Making your wincons slower and more fragile might be risky. I do think i will try out a full Flash list myself eventually

This deck is already so heavy on the 3, I don't think I want Clique, and sideboard space is cramped as always. Going lower on Geist I'm skeptical of, I've even been thinking of going up to 4 as getting one killed can be really devastating. Resto could work as she's a little less fragile but shares a deckslot with Cryptic, so I'm not sure I'd want more than one

For now I've been boarding out some number of geists for any matchup where stabilizing is crucial and closing the game is secondary, like affinity, but I have found myself without a wincon a lot or having to rely on a Queller carrying something scary, and praying it doesnt die. I don't think that boarding out more than one geist (going down to 2) is really ever correct with these kinds of lists.

I'd like to discuss sideboarding a bit, as this is still very much all over the place when I look at different lists. Many run some number lf relics, which I am not a fan of but might just be a necessary evil if ignoring grave decks is not an option

I often find myself with a lack of good wincons postboard in matchups where I'd like to board out geist, so either boarding out geist is just entirely wrong or some alternative wincons are needed to come in

I'm tired of the Opt vs SV argument as noone is ever convincing anyone of anything ever, but I do want to say; there is nothing "marginal" about SV's addition to your land drops, as there is nothing subjective here; Frank Kartsten straight up did the math. X cantrips and Y scrying gives you a probability of seeing Z lands, the same amount as adding lands would increase the probability. This is all objective math.

That is not the entirety of the story as you actually need to cast cantrips, which is why playing 20 cantrips with 18 lands is a very bad idea even if the math works out, and Opt's instant speed gives you more room to cast it even though SV is more powerful statisticallly. THAT is where the wiggle room lies and where some people prefer 6 cantrips or 4, or SV or Opt. But let's just please God stop arguing what land base "feels right" or how scrying is "marginal" when the objective data is available
